DR-Reviews - My contribution to the Pleasurize Music Community
Here are my references for good and bad sounding CDs I've currently bought. It's not my aim to review music and artists here, but the sound-quality of CD-mastering in terms of loundness war. The DR-values are measured with TT DR Offline Meter - www.dynamicrange.de/en/download - Vers. 1.3 based on WAV files. I want to thank Tischmeyer Technology and algorithmix for this great invention. Although, I trust this as well as what I can hear and see (on wave editor), I can't guarantee for correctness. | CD: Various - Grand 12-inches Vol.6 (Compliled by Ben Liebrand) [#8-86974-940425] DR-Value: 11 | Peaks: almost enough headroom Comment: Again - best sounding compilation of dance classics. Ben Liebrand is my reference for best practise in remastering. Thank you Ben for saving the music! | |
| CD: Röyksopp - Junior [#5-099969-627125] DR-Value: 5 | Peaks: permanently 'over' Comment: Sounds unfeasible! It's unbelievable what the master engineers have done to the sophisticated music of Röyksopp! Even easy-/home-listening music ist destroyed by loudness war. The mastering seems to compete against noisiest RnB-tracks. | |
 | CD: Kraftwerk - Tour De France Soundtracks [#7-24359-17102] DR-Value: 10 | Peaks: max. -0,03 dB Comment: Definitly the best Sound you can get and therefore my reference für electronic (minimal) music genre. Kraftwerk shows that over compression isn't needed to produce powerfull sound with punchy basses and brilliant highs. Far from it! You can replay the CD on high volume, without distortion, without beeing annoying and/or getting your ears exhausted. | |
 | CD: Vintage Science Fiction - Traveler [#4-260095-741929] DR-Value: 7 | Peaks: max. -0,3 dB Comment: In electronic music genre and modern production standards DR-Value-7 is absolutely ok. There is no over compression in there. And of course it must be good: the Album with its fine and varied electronic music is mastered by PMF-mastermind Friedemann Tischmeyer himself! | |
| CD: Various - Grand 12-inches Vol.1 (Compliled by Ben Liebrand) [#5-099751-108825] DR-Value: 12 | Peaks: almost enough headroom Comment: Best compilation in selection AND sound for 12'' Dance-Classics. DR12 ist the averaged value covering 4 CDs. | |
 | CD: Various - Grand 12-inches Vol.2 (Compliled by Ben Liebrand) [#5-099751-988526] DR-Value: 12 | Peaks: almost enough headroom Comment: see Review Vol.1 | |
 | CD: Various - Grand 12-inches Vol.2 (Compliled by Ben Liebrand) [#8-28768-223123] DR-Value: 12 | Peaks: almost enough headroom Comment: see Review Vol.1 | |
 | CD: Various - Grand 12-inches Vol.2 (Compliled by Ben Liebrand) [#8-28768-937921] DR-Value: 12 | Peaks: almost enough headroom Comment: see Review Vol.1 | |
 | CD: Various - Grand 12-inches Vol.2 (Compliled by Ben Liebrand) [#8-86972-777122] DR-Value: 11 | Peaks: almost enough headroom Comment: I'm waiting with pleasant anticipation for Vol.6! | |
 | CD: Reamonn - Reamon [#0-602517-997813] DR-Value: 6 | Peaks: -0,1 dB Comment: At least it seems, that the engineers have heard about headroom: Peaks are constantly limited to -0,1 dB. Although the music is over compressed it sounds somewhat acceptable and I can't here distortions or clipping. But surely the soulful music of Reamonn misses an expressiv dynamic range - what a pity! | |
 | CD: Ian Pooley - In other words [#8-07297-38411-6] DR-Value: 9 | Peaks: few overs Comment: Sounds good - because of it's modern style of music and mode of production the DR-value is passable. | |
 | CD: James Blunt - All the lost soul [#0-75678-99724-2] DR-Value: 8 | Peaks: max. -0,01 dB Comment: It sounds feasible, but DR-value 8 is of course to much, especially for an predominant ballads-containing album. | |
